The Pro Display XDR is gone. And the 32-inch 6K with it
Apple removed the Pro Display XDR from its catalogue on 3 March 2026, after seven years with no direct successor. Its replacement, the Studio Display XDR, is a 27-inch in 5K. In other words: Apple no longer sells any 32-inch 6K monitor. Here is what that changes if that is precisely what you were looking for.
What happened
The Pro Display XDR came out in December 2019 with the Mac Pro. 32 inches, 6016 × 3384, mini-LED backlight, 1,000 sustained nits, 1,600 nits peak: a benchmark, at €5,499 — without the stand, charged at nearly €1,100 more. It was never renewed.
On 3 March 2026, Apple withdrew it from sale, along with its stand. The new Studio Display XDR keeps the XDR name but changes category: 27 inches, 5120 × 2880, mini-LED with 2,304 zones, 120 Hz with adaptive sync, up to 1,000 nits in SDR and 2,000 nits in HDR, Thunderbolt 5. It is announced from $3,299 (£2,999), with nano-textured glass as an extra.
It is an excellent monitor, and it is cheaper than its predecessor. But it does not replace it for everyone: it is smaller and lower in resolution. Those who bought an XDR for its 32 inches and its 20 million pixels no longer have an equivalent at Apple.

Why it is the best successor: it even displays slightly more pixels than the XDR (21.2 million against 20.4), with the same aluminium finish and glossy anti-reflective glass. What you give up is the extreme brightness of Apple's mini-LED: 500 sustained nits against 1,000. If you are not grading HDR all day, it does not show.

Why it deserves a look: it is exactly the resolution of the Pro Display XDR — 6016 × 3384, to the pixel — on a matte panel that settles reflections. At around €1,210, it costs less than a quarter of the price the XDR sold for.

Should you miss the XDR?
That depends entirely on what you did with it. Three profiles, three answers.
- You were grading reference HDR. The XDR was calibrated for that, and the Studio Display XDR does better still on that ground, with 2,000 nits peak and 2,304 backlight zones. Stay with Apple: no €1,200 IPS monitor plays in that category, and we will not claim otherwise.
- You mainly wanted surface and resolution. That was the case for the majority of buyers: editors, photographers, developers, architects. There, Apple's successor is a step back — five inches and six million pixels fewer. A 32-inch 6K remains the right answer, and there are not many left on the market.
- You hesitated because of the price. The question no longer arises in the same terms: at €1,210, the entry ticket to the 32-inch 6K has been cut by more than four.
Why so little 6K on the market?
Because the resolution costs as much to feed as to produce. A 6K requires a rare panel, but also connectivity capable of carrying more than 25 Gbit/s: DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, or DSC compression. Few manufacturers risked it while Apple occupied the segment alone. Its withdrawal leaves a space that very few products occupy today.

Apple's reasoning is not absurd: at 27 inches, 5K reaches 218 ppi, exactly Retina density, and costs far less to produce.
